Venture Scout Records 1987 – 1988

Cambridge District Scout Archive

The following is a breakdown of information regarding 15 Ventures Scouts of the 50th Cambridge (Milton) with examples of the activities recorded.  Several had minimal details recorded, one only an initialled name.

Of the 15

  • 3 were female, all previously Guides, 8 male and 4 only known by an initial.
  • 11 had details of their Venture Scout Award recorded, only one Queens Scout Award
  • 4 were at school (3 at Impington Village College and one at Hills Road) and 5 at work.
  • The only religion recorded was CoE, 9 of the names.

Three ‘Expeditions and Camps’ were recorded, one a cycling expedition in Cornwall, all in the UK.  These seem to overlap with a Three peaks event and Skiing, presumably not day events, which are listed under ‘Activity’ but not as camps or Expeditions.   Other ‘Activities’ are a Night hike (possibly the CUSAGC Endurance Hike), pony trekking, rafting and ten pin bowling.

Eight were members of the Unit Executive, recorded as the ‘Leadership’ component of the VSA.

Ten listed Wine making as the ‘Creativity’ component, presumably a Unit activity.  Brewing beer is known in Units outside Cambridge.

A ‘Drinks debate’ was almost universally recorded under the ‘Relationship’ component, and a ‘Drugs debate’ under Values.  Training concerning Magistrates work was also part of the ‘Values’.

‘Independence’ was seemingly completed by Shopping; an activity that may reflect a time before retail therapy was an activity, but probably a description that undersells the actual task.

Three worked with colony, pack or troop and other local youth centred activities are listed as ‘Community Involvement’.  Some listed Edmund House, a local initiative providing support for those with learning disabilities.

The notes, as can be seen, were minimal descriptions of an event.
