From the year 1930 the 28th Cambridge Scout Group consisted of a Cub pack. The Cubs stopped being members of the Group from the age of 11. Many Scout Groups lost track of members during the war because of the movement of leaders, closure of the group or as with the 28th a lack of a Scout Troop and Rover Crew. It is the involvement of Miss Isaacson who was very locally based, both living and working as a teacher in the same road as the Cub pack met, that maintained the link with ex Cubs. The following records are the only mention of ex 28th Cubs during the second war.
Private Thomas Leonard Whitley, 5933142, 1st Battalion Cambridgeshire regiment was captured and recorded at Hiroshima POW camp. He survived the war.
Private Samuel Wilfred Whitley 5933027, 1st Battalion Cambridgeshire regiment, his brother, died whilst a prisoner of war of ‘cardiac beriberi’ in 1945. He is buried in Yokohama War Cemetery. Born in 1921 he was 24 when he died.

In early 1939, Following mobilisation both Cambridgeshire battalions served with the 18th (East Anglian) Infantry Division, initially on the Norfolk Coast and were then sent to the Far East where they fought in the Malayan Campaign and the Battle of Singapore
The Battalion fought at Sime Road Camp in Singapore and defended the camp for two days before being ordered to surrender to the Imperial Japanese Army by the commander of the garrison, Lieutenant General Arthur Percival.
