The Cairngorms Weather Survey 1952 and 1953

Cambridge District Scout Archive

This project was taken on when the difficulties of living up a mountain was beyond the skills of the existing Meteorological team.

The highest named location was the Wells of Dee at 4000′. The camps communicated by heliograph and a distance of 4.5 miles is given for one link. It appears from the photographic records and the minimal notes attached that the Rovers arranged the transport and did the preparatory work, transport and portage. Initially the loan of equipment was hard to negotiate, in 1953 it was worth £300, but eventually the reliability of the Rovers was proved. Each base had a team of four who rotated, to provide change and interest for the Rovers.
